Maine Credit Union League
The Maine Credit Unions' Curriculum provides financial education lessons for elementary school students. The program, which can be led by credit union staff or volunteers in an in-classroom setting, takes approximately one hour to complete. With the curriculum being turnkey, any credit union staff or volunteer can utilize the program and lead a lesson with little preparation––making it easier than ever to engage with area schools through education outreach.
Our objective is to bring a fun and easy curriculum into the classroom to begin educating students about the money and the importance of healthy finances. This program was released in the fall of 2021 to begin use in the 2021/2022 school year. Our goal was to have at least 10 credit unions download a minimum of 3 grade levels in the first half of the school year to be used during in-person classroom settings.
The target audiences for the Maine Credit Unions' Curriculum is both elementary students in grades K through 5, as well as the credit union staff and/or volunteers who will be going into the classroom to provide the students with financial education.
Each K-5 grade level has its own unique Money Book and Educator Guide that can be easily downloaded and printed. The Money Books are workbooks that students complete as they follow along during a lesson plan. Each book is specifically written and visually designed to appeal to the age group it is focusing on. The Educator Guides are what the credit union staff or volunteers reference when leading the lessons. Along with a script, there are tips sprinkled throughout––encouraging volunteers to get up and walk around the room, or when to call on students and engage them in activities. The programs are hands-on, engaging, educational, and even fun! In an effort to make the curriculum easy to pick up and leverage in schools, printed versions of the Money Books and Educator Guides are the only materials needed to lead lessons.
